Yale School of Medicine research found that many low-income mothers have limited access to tools to help manage their stress, and Levey implemented Yale's intervention model in the New Haven community. New Haven, Connecticut, native Kia Levey, 38, project director of the New Haven MOMS (Mental Health Outreach for Mothers) Partnership, has dedicated her career to improving the lives of those in her community, including single mothers battling the challenges of poverty (one third of children in Connecticut who are living below the poverty line are being raised by single mothers). Afghan Cycles, a feature-length documentary she produced about the team, will hit the film festival circuit next year. "These girls are harassed and threatened, but they are taking back the streets and their rights every time they get on their bikes," says Galpin. but travels regularly-is now training the first Afghan Women's National Cycling Team, which she calls "a civil rights movement on two wheels" due to the culture's taboo against women riding bikes. It made me realize how bad.violence against women still is throughout the world." She started her work in Afghanistan because, she says, "it was repeatedly ranked the worst country in the world to be a woman." That's where Galpin-who lives in the U.S. ![]() ![]() "Years later my young sister was raped on her college campus right as I was preparing to become a mother for the first time. "I was raped and nearly killed when I was 18 years old," says Galpin. Propelled by her own experience with gender violence, former sports conditioning specialist Shannon Galpin, 41, started Mountain2Mountain, a nonprofit that works to create opportunities for women and girls living in conflict zones. ![]()
